He will still play for the team in the upcoming tournament
The Mzansi Super League (MSL) is a South African domestic T20 league that was only launched last year. MSL 2019 is the second season of the league and it will start on November 8. Batsman AB de Villiers was the captain of the Tshwane Spartans last year. He will still play for the team this year but it is already confirmed that he will not be team captain this year.
Spartans coach Mark Boucher confirms the news. ‘AB won’t captain, we’ve discussed that. He’s a fantastic player but he must go out there and play and perform like he’s been performing in the last while’, said Boucher. ‘We have a few leadership options, we’ll talk to them and see how they feel'.
The team also brings overseas players Eoin Morgan and Dean Elgar for MSL 2019. De Villiers scored a total of 189 runs in last year’s MSL tournament. The batsman retired from international cricket last year.
Boucher adds that de Villiers does not need the burden of being team captain this year. ‘I don’t think AB needs that burden, he’s in that stage of his life where he must enjoy his cricket and that’s probably when he plays his best’, Boucher added. The Spartans already have a lineup for the MSL 2019 but their captain is yet to be named.
