Gilchrist said that fans should not be too harsh with the young batsman
Former Australian cricketer Adam Gilchrist feels that cricket fans should not be too harsh on Indian batsman Rishabh Pant. The young cricketer has been criticised, saying things like he couldn’t prove to them that he’s ‘MS Dhoni’s successor’.
Pant has been named as the first-choice wicketkeeper of the Men in Blue since MS Dhoni’s absence. However, he drew criticisms for his poor batting as he struggled to score runs. Gilchrist believes that fans should avoid comparing Pant with the legendary Captain Cool.
‘I'm not big on comparisons like I have said before. I think Indians fans shouldn’t be trying to compare him to Dhoni. Dhoni has set such a high benchmark. One day someone might match it but it is probably unlikely. Rishabh looks like a very talented young player’, he said.
‘Just don’t put too much pressure on him too early and expect that he’s going to produce Dhoni-like performances every day. My advice to Rishabh Pant will be: learn everything you can from Dhoni. Don’t try to be Dhoni. Just try to be the best Rishabh Pant you can’, he advised.
Adam Gilchrist coached the Kings XI Punjab, a team that plays in the Indian Premier League (IPL). To know more about the IPL, read the page on Betwala.
