Australia has named Alex Carey as one of their members in the upcoming Test match series for the upcoming South Africa tour.
Matthew Wade has been removed from Australia's lineup against South Africa and has been replaced by Alex Carey. This is because of the fact that Wade was included in the T20I lineup of Australia for their upcoming five-match series against New Zealand.
Wade took part in four Tests and eight innings that were played against India. There, he only managed to score 173 runs at an average of 21.62.
Talking about the team’s lineup, national selector Trevor Hohns said, ‘The squad is quite similar to that selected for the final two Tests of the recently-completed Border-Gavaskar series, with the exception of Matt Wade, who will join the Australian men's T20I squad in New Zealand, and the addition of Alex Carey, who has been in strong form with both bat and gloves’.
By having Carey in the lineup, cricket expert Isa Guha believes that the 29-year-old player has what it takes to be a Test captain for Australia, thus questioning Tim Paine’s captaincy. Guha says, ‘I like his chances whether it’s (maybe) after The Ashes. The question is whether he’s going to be too old, I personally don’t think so’.
‘I think he’s someone that has the respect of the dressing room, one of the nicest blokes in cricket, seems gentle and kind on the exterior but underneath that there’s definitely a determination and competitiveness that’s really suited to being an Australian cricketer and being an Australian captain as well’, she added.
To date, there is still no exact date for the said Test tour but it is expected to go underway in March or April. Meanwhile, the five-match T20I series against New Zealand is scheduled from February 22 to March 7. To further understand these cricket formats, head over to Betwala.
