Anil Kumble shares his thoughts on Dhoni and his future in India team

He said selectors should give Dhoni a proper send-off for his contributions to cricket. Former skipper Anil Kumble said that he is not sure if  MS Dhoni still fits in India cricket team’s current roster. He said that he wants the selectors to give Dhoni a proper send-off to thank him for his contributions to the team. Before India left for the West Indies Tour, Dhoni’s future in the team was a subject of debate among fans. The wicket-keeper made himself unavailable for the tour because of his military training.

‘Im not really sure. I think Pant has certainly made a lot of claims as a keeper-batsman, especially in the T20 format. So, it's important to have a conversation and you need to have a proper send-off, he certainly deserves that’, said Kumble. ‘But having said that, Pant has also shown some inconsistency. That's a call the selectors need to make. Today, in spite of all of that, are you going to back him (Pant) or someone else, or would you look back. I wouldn't but I think it's important that the selectors take a call on that’, he added.

During India’s West Indie’s tour, Pant wasn't’ able to deliver what’s expected of him, which raised disappointment to the selectors.

Kumble said that it’s important for the selectors to communicate their plans for Dhoni. He also said that if they plan to include Dhoni in T20 World Cup squad, he should play in every game.

‘For the team's sake, the selectors need to sit down and have as discussion around what the plans are because it's important that things be communicated. If the selectors believe that Dhoni is in the scheme of things for the T20 World Cup, then I think he should be playing every game.’

‘If he's not, then it's important that they have a discussion around how they need to make this happen. I think they need to do that in the next couple of months," said India's highest wicket-taker across formats.’

Kumble also questioned if Sharma is the best player to do the opening in Test.

‘Yes, are we in a desperate situation where we are looking for an opener in someone who has done well at the domestic level, is it worth considering that or should Rohit... Yes, he is a high-quality player sitting on the bench, should he be pushed at the top?’, he said.

India cricket team’s next assignment is South Africa’s tour of India. The teams will play three sets of T20I, ODI, and Test series. The Test match is included for the World Test Championship.

The World Test Championship will feature 9 teams from the main cricket playing nations.  The ICC launched the World test Championship to give more context in the oldest format of cricket. More details on the WTC is up on Betwala.
