Fairfax lost their defamation appeal against Windies Chris Gayle
Australian media group Fairfax lost their second Aus$300,000 defamation appeal against West Indies batsman Chris Gayle on Tuesday. Fairfax claimed Gayle had showed his genitals and indecently propositioned a massage therapist in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 in Sydney, Australia.
Gayle won the case in October 2018 when jurors found that the media group’s defamation appeal was motivated by malice and had failed to establish the truth. Fairfax then appealed for the case again when they claimed it did not receive a fair trial. However, the court dismissed its appeal.
Fairfax was previously the publisher of The Sydney Morning Herald and The Age but it is now owned by commercial broadcaster Nine Entertainment.
The next big tournament for West Indies after the World Cup is the Twenty20 and one-day international (ODI) series against India. The first T20 match will be on August 3 at Central Broward Regional Park in Florida.
