Batsmen with most runs in IPL history

The player that scores the most number of runs in a single IPL season is awarded the Orange Cap. In a competition played by the world’s best cricketers, winning the Orange Cap is no mean feat. But an even bigger achievement is to be on the list of the top 10 highest run-scorers in the history of the tournament. To be on that list requires a lot of consistency, which is not every batsman’s cup of tea. Let’s find out who the top 10 run-scorers in IPL history are.

Virat Kohli

Former India and RCB captain Virat Kohli is yet to win an IPL trophy and the Orange Cap. But he boasts of an incredible record of having the most runs in the tournament’s history. Since the first season of the IPL, Kohli has scored 6283 runs at an average of 37.39 and strike rate of 129.94. This includes five centuries, second-most in the league.

Shikhar Dhawan

Second name on the list of most runs in the IPL is Shikhar Dhawan. The southpaw, who has played for three different teams, has 5784 runs in 192 games at an average of 34.84 and strike rate of 126.64. The elegant batsman has two centuries as well to his name.

Rohit Sharma

The most successful captain in the tournament, Rohit Sharma or Hitman started his IPL career with Deccan Chargers before joining Mumbai Indians in 2011. He has 5611 runs in 213 matches at an average and strike rate of 31.17 and 130.39.

Suresh Raina

CSK’s match-winner for several years, Suresh Raina went unsold in the IPL 2022 auction. But he is the fourth-highest run-scorer in the tournament with 5528 runs at an average and strike rate of 32.51 and 136.73.

David Warner

Former Sunrisers Hyderabad captain David Warner was sold to Delhi Capitals for only Rs 6.25 crore in the 2022 auction. The destructive batsman has 5449 runs at an average of 41.59 and strike rate of almost 140. This includes four centuries. Warner is the only batsman in the IPL to have won the Orange Cap thrice – in 2015, 2017 and 2019.

Ab de Villiers

IPL’s sixth-highest run-scorer Ab de Villiers will not be seen in action in IPL 2022 since he retired from all forms of cricket last year. The 360 degree batsman scored 5162 runs in 184 games at an average and strike rate of 39.70 and 151.68.

Chris Gayle

Chris Gayle, who didn’t register his name for the IPL 2022 auction, is the seventh-highest run-scorer in IPL with 4965 runs in 142 matches at an average and strike rate of 39.72 and 148.96. This includes six centuries, the most by any batsman in the tournament. Gayle won the Orange Cap in 2011 and 2012.

MS Dhoni

Captain of CSK, MS Dhoni could be playing his last IPL in 2022. Not only does Dhoni boast of excellent captaincy records in the IPL – having led CSK to four titles – he is also among the highest run-scorers of all time. He is the eighth-highest run-getter in the IPL with 4746 runs at an average and strike rate of 39.55 and 135.83. If MSD roars back to form this year, we could see him play the IPL next season too.

Robin Uthappa

Robin Uthappa was sold to CSK for Rs 2 crore in the IPL 2022 auction. The batsman, who previously played for KKR and played a crucial role in both of their title wins in 2012 and 2014, has scored 4722 IPL runs in 193 games at an average and strike rate of 27.94 and 130.15. Uthappa won the Orange Cap in 2014.

Gautam Gambhir

Gautam Gambhir, who led KKR to two titles, last played IPL in 2018 before announcing retirement. Gambhir is the 10th-highest run-scorer in the tournament, having 4217 runs at an average and strike rate 31.00 and 123.88.
