The 28-year-old was named Player of the Match in the recent Test
The Leeds Test was the third match of the Ashes 2019 series. This also marked England’s first win in the tournament, after Australia’s win in the opening Test and the draw of the second Test at Lord’s. Ben Stokes led England’s win by one wicket in the recent match against Australia. England’s victory in the Leeds Test ties both teams in the Ashes series. Stokes is 'over the moon' that the team finally won a Test against Australia.
‘We knew if we lost this game then the Ashes were gone’, said Stokes. ‘We’ve got a few days off before the next Test starts, so when we turn up to Manchester, we’ve got to put everything behind us, what we've just managed to achieve, and start again because this will all be forgotten if we lose the next Test because then the Ashes are gone’.
The 28-year-old allrounder was unbeaten on 135 as England took the victory in Leeds. Stokes also had a remarkable 76-run partnership with bowler Jack Leach. The Leeds Test marks England’s highest successful run chase in Test cricket and the second-highest in Ashes history. Stokes is also grateful to the team’s fans that supported them in the recent match.
‘It was absolutely deafening. Everywhere around the world, not just Leeds, the support we get from the Barmy Army and everybody, who turns out to watch us play, no matter what the situation of the game, they've always got us, they're always singing, the Western Terrace were absolutely fantastic, they were cheering every dot ball, every boundary’, stated Stokes.
The upcoming Test match between England and Australia will run from September 4 to September 9. It will be held at Old Trafford in Manchester, England. The odds are for England (-140.85) to win against Australia (+120). Stokes is also an overseas player for Rajasthan Royals.
