England seals victory as they win the fifth and final day of their second Test against South Africa at Cape Town.
England won over South Africa by 189 runs on the fifth day of their second Test. The Player of the Match, Ben Stokes, bowled his team to victory as he claimed the last three wickets within 14 deliveries.
This marks England’s first success at the Newlands grounds since 1957. On top of that, it was also a good example of the importance of the fifth day in Test matches. Currently, the ICC is considering to alter the format-- from five days to four days.
The final day of the match started with Joe Root’s chasing of eight wickets to square the series at 1-1. After tea, England still needed five as South Africa continued to be defiant on the field.
Suddenly, Stokes surprises everyone by overthrowing Dwaine Pretorius and Anrich Nortje with consecutive balls. Then, he finished Vernon Philander with only 8.2 overs remaining.
Still, South Africa showed perseverance with Pieter Malan, Rassive van der Dussen and Quinton de Kock achieving 324 deliveries. However, England matched their hard work and gripped their catches.
England and South Africa are set for another Test match on January 16, 2020.
