The former Australian opener believes Smith is already creating his own cricket legacy
Chris Rogers praises Steve Smith’s great performance in the opening Test of the Ashes 2019 series. Smith was one of Australia’s key players that lead to the team winning the match against England. The opening Test was Smith’s comeback to cricket after he was banned for a year because of a ball-tampering scandal in March 2018.
Rogers, a former cricket player for Australia, did not expect Smith’s great play this year after he saw Smith play in 2013. Rogers even compared Smith to some of cricket’s greats. 'He (Smith) is right up there. I was lucky enough to play against Sachin Tendulkar, Virat Kohli, and AB de Villiers. All of them were exceptional. Smith is in that league,' Rogers stated. Rogers retired from international cricket last 2015. His last tournament was the Ashes 2015 series.
Rogers also gave compliments to another cricket player in the series, Nathan Lyon. Lyon played in the opening Test match against England as well. He picked up six wickets in the second innings and nine in the whole match. 'It’s pretty incredible where he (Lyon) has got and where he might get to. The amount of improvement he has made as an off-spinner… There are not too many other spinners Australia would swap Nathan Lyon with,' Rogers continued.
The second Test of the Ashes 2019 series started yesterday, August 14. Smith and Lyon continues to play for Australia. The Ashes series is the cricket rivalry tournament of Australia and England. These teams also play for the ICC Cricket World Cup, one of the world’s premier sports leagues. Find out more about different sports leagues in the world at Betwala.
