It will be more difficult for MS Dhoni to have a comeback if the IPL will not push through this year due to COVID-19.
MS Dhoni had last played for the Men in Blue on July 2019 for the ICC Cricket World Cup. With that, Dhoni was expected to have his comeback in IPL 2020 for him to earn a spot in the T20 World Cup which was set at the end of the year. However, due to the outbreak of the virus, the IPL had been postponed indefinitely.
As the global situation worsens, the resumption of IPL becomes more and more uncertain as well as Dhoni’s chance of returning to the main cricket scene. As per former cricketer Gautam Gambhir, it will be very difficult for Dhoni to have a comeback if the IPL gets cancelled this year. ‘On what basis can he be selected since he's not been playing for the last one or one and a half years’, Gautam said.
Gautam also shared how he thinks that KL Rahul could serve as an apt replacement for Dhoni should he not make it to the T20 World Cup. He also described Rahul as a great batsman and wicketkeeper who can definitely keep and bat at No. 3 or 4.
Meanwhile, Dhoni’s former teammate VVS Laxman still believes that Dhoni still has a couple of IPL seasons left to play. After which, Dhoni’s fate in Indian cricket may be determined with the help of the selection committee.
Dhoni is the captain of the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) who actively plays for the IPL. To know more about the playing teams in the Indian Premier League, check out Betwala.
