The South African captain also admitted that they had a hard time to maintain their momentum
South African Test skipper Faf du Plessis spoke during the post-match press conference in Visakhapatnam. The team captain was disappointed with their loss in the match but it didn’t let him down. He described his team as ‘proud’ and ‘brilliant’ as they worked hard in the first Test.
‘I thought it was a real line in the sand for us as a team. Really proud of the first innings, the way we batted. There was an opportunity for us to go the other way and we didn't. We played really well, senior players put their hands up in Quinny (de Kock) and Dean (Elgar) getting fantastic hundreds and to get 400 in the sub-continent is never anything easy to do. The way we responded, it was brilliant’, du Plessis said.
As they faced defeat in the match, du Plessis admitted that India’s opening batsman Rohit Sharma made things hard for his side. Rohit struck two hundred in the first Test.
‘There were a few half-chances [in the second innings] that didn't go our way and that's sort of where the game slipped away. We tried to stay in the fight, stay in the contest. But the way Rohit played, especially in that second innings, made it tough for us’, du Plessis said.
In the first Test, South African spinners struggled to maintain their momentum due to Rohit’s intimidating batting. The pace of the game was made fast because of the Indian batsman’s powerful knocks.
