England secured their semi-final place after beating New Zealand
England secured their place in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 semi-finals when they won against New Zealand yesterday by 119 runs. The Black Caps scored 186 runs in 45 overs while home nation got 305/8 in 50 overs.
However, the Kiwis can still play in the semi-finals of the tournament. This is because Pakistan will need to increase their net run-rate in their last game against Bangladesh on Friday at Lord’s Cricket Ground.
England batsman and wicket-keeper Jonny Bairstow was named player of the match when he added 106 runs to his team’s scores. Batsman Jason Roy got 60 and team captain Eoin Morgan achieved 42 runs.
“I am really pleased. We knew these two games were must-win to give ourselves the best opportunity of reaching the semi-final,” said Bairstow. “We knew the performance in the last couple of games weren’t up to scratch. To play the way we have and hopefully keep it going into the semis is pleasing.”
