Gautam Gambhir has commented on Dhoni’s style of captaining, playing.
MS Dhoni is undoubtedly one of the greatest players to ever play cricket. He is revered for winning two World Cups, a Champions Trophy, and taking the Indian team to the no.1 spot in Tests. On the other hand, he is criticized for favoring one player over another, a few controversial decisions regarding player selection and treatment of seniors during his tenure as captain. As of the moment, he is being highly criticized because of his performance in the recently concluded ICC Cricket World Cup. He was unable to bring India to the finals and is receiving a lot of flak for it. Gautam Gambhir has been vocal about his criticism of Dhoni and has never shied away from doing so.
In a recent TV show, Gautum Gambhir said that at one point, MS Dhoni decided that Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag, and Gambhir should not play alongside one another. This was during the ODI tri-series back in 2012 against Australia. Dhoni, being captain, didn’t want three senior players affecting the fielding standards.
“In the 2012 Tri-series in Australia, Dhoni declared that he can’t play all three (Gambhir, Sachin, and Sehwag) of us together as he was looking ahead at the 2015 World Cup. It was a massive shock, I think it would have been a massive shock for any cricketer. I have not heard anyone be told in 2012 that they would never be a part of the 2015 World Cup. I always had the impression that if you keep scoring runs, age is a just a number,” he said.
He added that Dhoni decided to do this in order to bring in younger players into the team in preparation for the 2015 World Cup.
