The 24-year-old victim was burned alive by five men including the accused.
After the Hyderabad rape accused being killed in an encounter with the police, the country mourned the victim. The victim, who was just 24 years old, was burned alive by five men including the accused who would later get out of jail after getting bail. The victim would suffer burns to 90% of her entire body.
She was originally on her way to Raebareli to attend the hearing of her rape case which she filed against those who would later torch her to death. After the incident, she was airlifted to Safdarjung hospital in Delhi. Unfortunately, she wouldn’t make it due to the severity of her injuries and cardiac arrest. This led to mass protests all over Pradesh against the government.
Gautam Gambhir, a former Indian cricketer and current GJP MP from East Delhi, expressed deep sorrow for the death of the victim. ‘It is very disheartening that today we all have failed as a nation. Today I feel ashamed as an Indian as we failed a woman, who was first raped then burned brutally by the accused. It is disheartening that we as a nation have failed to save her’, he said in an interview.
The family of the victim demanded a visit from UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. She would be laid to rest in fields owned by her family on the outskirts of their village in police presence. The family said in an interview that she was going to start her new job in a bank days before the incident. The family now wants the government to provide a job at a bank for the youngest sister.
Gambhir later asked both parties no to politicize the issue. ‘It is very hard to feel the pain of the woman’s family. The nation belongs to both men and women. We have to stop a situation where women feel unsafe after sunset. I want this country for women as much as for men. They have contributed a lot to the building of the nation. There is a need to change the mindsets and not the dressing style of women’.
