Former cricketer Sunil Gavaskar is not pleased with the selection process of Team India
Former right-handed batsman Sunil Gavaskar expressed his disappointment with India cricket team’s process in selecting its players. Gavaskar is not happy with how the India team is constantly dropping and adding players in their roster. He said that this greatly affects a player’s self-esteem.
Gavaskar cited players who were dropped by the team management despite having good performance in matches.
He shared Ravichandran Ashwin's situation during the West Indies tour. Ashwin is an exceptional player in red-ball cricket, but the spinner was left to warm the benches during the Test match against West Indies. Jadeja was the only one who manned the spinning department.
‘You don’t become ICC’s No. 1 Test bowler for nothing. He has the ability to pick wickets anywhere in the world. The team management has to understand this and back him’.
Gavaskar also cited Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Murali Vijay’s situation to support his claims.
‘I remember last year in South Africa Bhuvneshwar Kumar picked up a lot of wickets in the first Test, he really swung the ball but he was dropped for the next Test. Murali Vijay too I believe should have been given a longer run’.
‘Selection has to be in such a way that the confidence of the player is not down. I mean there may be communication inside the dressing room which we are certainly not aware’.
India and South Africa will proceed with the third day of the first Test match today, October 4, 2019. The scores accumulated from the matches are included in the World Test Championship.
