Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022, which is set to kick off on March 26th, will witness a sort of commentary revolution with the introduction of Gujarati as one of the commentary languages. The 15th edition of the IPL will also feature two new teams viz the Gujarat Titans (GT) and the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), which increases the total team tally to 10. The innovative changes brought to the world’s most popular and richest T20 championship, will make it a spectacular event to watch.
The first match of the IPL 2022 will be played at Mumbai’s Wankhede stadium between last year’s finalists Chennai Super Kings and Kolkata Knight Riders. A total of 74 matches with 12 doubleheaders will be played in the contest, with the 70 league matches being held across Mumbai and Pune. Mumbai’s Wankhede stadium, the DY Patil stadium, Brabourne Stadium and the MCA stadium in Pune will host the league matches. The location of the four playoff matches is yet to be decided. Sunday, March 27th will witness the first doubleheader of the IPL 2022.
Meanwhile, Head (Sports) of Disney Star, Sanjog Gupta said that Gujarati commentary is being introduced for the Gujarati fans and the newly launched Gujarat Titans in the league. He was quoted by the Indian Express as saying, “No other state in India watches as much cricket as Maharashtra. According to the market and this time in IPL 74 matches will be shown in Marathi Language. Apart from this, the Gujarat team is new, so we are doing Gujarat commentary for the first time”.
Apart from the English and Hindi commentary, Kannada and Tamil have also been the languages for commentary in the last few years. This time the Guajarati commentary panel will feature the eminent cricketers from Gujarat namely former wicketkeeper-batsman Nayan Mongia, the charismatic all-rounder Irfan Pathan, ex-wicketkeeper Kiran More, who is also chairman of selectors and a famous Gujarati Radio Jockey.
