India Coach Said Fielding is Key to Beat Pakistan

Sridhar said fielding will play a key role in their upcoming match

Team India fielding coach Ramakrishnan Sridhar said that fielding will play a huge role in their team’s upcoming match against Pakistan.

“Fielding, I would say, is vital in every match,” said Sridhar in an interview at Trent Bridge. “I saw it at The Oval on Sunday when we played Australia. Although we had a big total — 352-5 — on the board, we had to field out of our skins to defend the total.”

“I think we should look to out-field our opponents, not only in the next game, but also in all games, and we expect our opponents to do the same,” continued Sridhar.

The coach also stated his current mix of players have the skills to intimidate other teams in matches.

“We have a terrific slip catcher and a safe catcher in Rohit (Sharma), and we have two guys, Virat (Kohli) and (Kedar) Jadhav, who are very intimidating in the position.”

However, when Sridhar was asked about fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah, Sridhar said Bumrah is still a work in progress as a fielder. Bumrah is currently the world’s number one ranked one-day international (ODI) bowler.

“Bumrah is probably one of the hardest workers as far as fielding goes,” said Sridhar. “From when he joined the team in 2016 to what he is now, he’s a massive improvement, although still a work in progress, but a massive improvement.”

Meanwhile, Sridhar said the team is not affected over their washed out game against New Zealand. He added that they are confident in their upcoming match because of their previous consecutive wins against South Africa and Australia.

“You really can’t control the weather, so we’ve had two good games,” stated Sridhar. “I went on to the (Trent Bridge) ground. It was almost like a skating rink. So it would have been too much of a risk for the players to play on there, especially in the early phase of the tournament.”

India will play against Pakistan on Sunday at Old Trafford Cricket Ground. The Men in Blue currently have -244 odds to win the game while Pakistan have +200 odds.
