India won against Bangladesh by 28 runs to secure place in semi-final
India secured their place in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 semi-final when they won their match against Bangladesh yesterday by 28 runs. The Men in Blue scored 314/9 in 50 overs while the Tigers got 286 runs in 48 overs.
India batsmen opener Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul started the game with the highest wicket stand in the tournament when they got 180 runs. Bangladesh fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman claimed five wickets including India captain Virat Kohli’s 26. Rahman then continued his attack with figures of 5-59 in his first 10 overs.
Meanwhile, Sharma was dropped on nine in deep midwicket by Bangladesh batsman Tamim Iqbal. Sharma then achieved his second successive ton with a single off all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan. However, Sharma was caught at extra cover by the Tigers’ batsman Liton Das off the bowling of all-rounder Soumya Sarkar. Rahul was also caught behind Bangladesh fast bowler Rubel Hossain for 77.
At the other end of the match, Kohli tried to build singles and occasional boundaries with batsman Rishabh Pant. This was prevented by Tigers’ captain Mashrafe Mortaza when he brought back Mustafizur into the game. Mustafizur struck in the space of three balls which successfully dismissed Kohli and all-rounder Hardik Pandya.
Pant used the short boundary on one side of the ground to get 48 with batsman MS Dhoni who added 33-ball 35. India achieved 35 more runs in the last five overs which successfully secured their place in the semi-finals.
India will play their last league stage match with Sri Lanka on Saturday at Headingley Carnegie. The Men in Blue currently have -625 odds to win the game while the Lions have +470 odds.
