Former Australia international all-rounder Shane Watson has been selected as an assistant coach to the IPL Franchise Delhi Capitals.
Watson, who has a rich experience of playing in the IPL expressed his happiness on working under his former teammate Ricky Ponting, who is the head Coach of the Delhi Capitals. This will be Watson’s first stint as a coach and he is all prepared to give his team its maiden win in the IPL.
Delhi Capitals issued a press release which quoted Watson as saying - "With Delhi Capitals, they have got a great squad. Now is the time to win their first title. I am super pumped to get over there, work with the boys, help them out as much as I can and hopefully, we can win the first title. Can't wait to get over there.”
Watson, 40, who was a part of the playing squad in Rajasthan Royals’ first ever victory in 2008, later went on to play for RCB and CSK. In 2018, he opened the batting for CSK and went on to produce some sensational knocks which helped CSK emerge winners that year.
Watson was part of the 2007 and 2015 Australian side that won the 50-over World Cup. In T20s, he was an exceptional T20 player too, having a strike rate of 145.32 in his 58-match career. Coming to his franchise cricket experience, the swashbuckling batsman has been part of nearly every league in the world. Along with the IPL, he has also played in the Big Bash League, Pakistan Super League, Caribbean Premier League and the Bangladesh Premier League.
In November 2020, Watson announced retirement from all forms of cricket after a dismal performance in the IPL with the Super Kings.
Delhi Capitals play their first game of IPL 2022 on March 27 against Mumbai Indians.
