Five-time champions Mumbai Indians’ poor run in the tournament continued as they slumped to a 12-run loss against an upbeat Punjab Kings. This is now their fifth straight loss in the Indian Premier League 2022. Chasing 199, MI put up a good fight to reach 186 for nine in 20 overs but eventually fell short of the target.
Dewald Brevis, who is widely hailed as the younger version of Ab de Villiers, top-scored for MI with 49 off 25 balls, while Tilak Varma made 36 off 20 deliveries. Although skipper Rohit Sharma scored only 28 runs, he created a new record for himself. The 34-year-old became only the second Indian player after Virat Kohli to score 10,000 runs in T20s. Overall he is the seventh batsman to achieve this feat.
For the Kings, Odean Smith was the best bowler with four wickets for 30 runs. Kagiso Rabada Kagiso Rabada picked up two wickets for 29 runs.
Earlier, Shikhar Dhawan and Mayank Agarwal hit a half century each to take Punjab to a big total of 198 for five. Dhawan (70) and Agarwal (52) shared 97 runs for the opening wicket and laid a solid foundation for the rest of the batsmen.
"It was a good night, very happy to contribute to the team's win. The crucial thing for us was the two points. We can't just say it was runs on the board, this game had a lot of ups and downs. There were a lot of crucial moments and more often than not, we were nailing and winning those moments, Mayank Agarwal said at the post-match presentation after winning the Player of the Match award.
