IPL 2022, Match 4: GT vs LSG preview

Match 4 of the IPL 2022 will be played between the two new teams of the season – Gujarat Titans and Lucknow Supergiants. The Titans will be led by Hardik Pandya, while Lucknow will be captained by former Punjab Kings skipper KL Rahul.

Lucknow are one of the strongest teams this season with the likes of Quinton de Kock, Even Lewis, Krunal Pandya. Krishnappa Gowtham, Marcus Stoinis, Jason Holder, Avesh Khan and Andrew Tye in their ranks. Gujarat, too, boast of some big names in Shubman Gill, David Miller, Vijay Shankar, Rashid Khan, Lockie Ferguson and Mohammad Shami.

Pitch report

The match will be played at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai where the relatively smaller boundary line helps the teams put up big totals. The surface is bouncy and will assist the quicks better than the spinners. The average first innings IPL total at the Wankhede is 182. The team batting second have a winning percentage of 60 on this ground.

Injury update and team news

GT – Only days before the tournament began, England’s Jason Roy opted out due to bio-bubble fatigue and Afghanistan’s Rahmanullah Gurbaz was signed as his replacement. Apart from that, mostly all the players from the squad are available for selection.

LSG – Only two overseas players - Dushmantha Chameera and Evin Lewis - are available for the first game of the season for Lucknow. Mark Wood has been ruled out of the season due to an injury while Jason Holder and Marcus Stoinis will miss the first few games due to international duties.

Probable XI for both the teams

Gujarat Titans: Shubman Gill, Matthew Wade (wk), Vijay Shankar, Hardik Pandya (c) Gurkeerat Singh Mann, David Miller, Rahul Tewatia, Rashid Khan, Lockie Ferguson, Mohammad Shami, R Sai Kishore

Lucknow Super Giants: KL Rahul (c), Quinton de Kock (wk), Evin Lewis, Manish Pandey, Deepak Hooda, Krunal Pandya, Krishnappa Gowtham, Dushmantha Chameera, Ravi Bishnoi, Avesh Khan, Ankit Rajpoot

Two players to watch out for from both teams

GT – Rashid Khan and Hardik Pandya

Rashid Khan is among the best T20 spinners in the world. The Afghan leg-spinner was a match winner for Sunrisers Hyderabad each season since joining them in 2017. Rashid is no mug with the bat, and can play a good cameo down the order at a good strike rate. We have seen him finish IPL games in the past. The other player to watch out for will be new captain Hardik Pandya. The all-rounder has no prior captaincy experience in the IPL and it will be interesting to see how he performs with his thinking cap. With the bat and ball he is already a proven match-winner.

LSG – KL Rahul and Avesh Khan

KL Rahul is currently one of the best players in the game’s shorter formats, especially in the IPL. The opener has been among the highest run-scorers in the IPL all the last four seasons, and overall has 3271 runs at an average of 47, including two hundreds and 27 fifties. Avesh Khan is another player to watch out for. He was the second-highest wicket-taker of IPL 2021 following which he got a chance to make his international debut against Sri Lanka.

Who will win the match between GT and LSG?

While Lucknow have a good batting line-up, Gujarat’s bowling line-up looks stronger. The toss will also play a big factor in deciding the winner. The team chasing at Wankhede has won 14 out of 20 T20 games since 2020, thus the team winning the toss is likely to bowl first. But going solely by how the two teams look on paper, Lucknow might edge past Gujarat in this game.
