Mumbai Indians beat Gujarat Titans by five runs in match 51 of IPL 2022. Batting first, the five-time champions put up a total of 177 runs in their 20 overs with their openers finally finding their form. Captain Rohit Sharma scored 43 off 28 while Ishan Kishan hit 45 off 29. This was the first 50-run opening partnership for Mumbai Indians this season.
From the middle order, the likes of Tilak Verma, Suryakumar Yadav and Tim David chipped in with runs. Yadav and Verma scored 13 and 21 runs respectively while Tim David remained unbeaten on 44.
Rashid Khan picked up two wickets and was also the most economical bowler. He conceded only 24 runs in four overs.
Chasing 178 to win, Gujarat Titans got off to a great start, with both their openers scoring a half-century each. Wriddhiman Saha scored 55 off 40 while Shubman Gill batted at a slightly better strike rate, scoring 52 off 36. The two put up a 106-run stand for the first wicket, but that wasn’t enough to take the team over the line as the rest of the batting line-up collapsed like a pack of cards before Gujarat eventually fell short of the target by five runs.
The loss, however, has not affected Gujarat’s ranking in the points table. They still remain right at top while Mumbai Indians too remain where they were, i.e. the ninth spot.
