India opted for Hanuma Vihari instead of Rohit Sharma
The Men in Blue are currently on the last leg of their West Indies tour this year which is the Test series. India and West Indies play two Tests against each other for the tour. The first Test match ran from August 22 to August 26. India won by 318 runs, with Ajinkya Rahane named as Player of the Match.
Team India had to choose between Hanuma Vihari and Rohit Sharma for their No. 6 spot. The team eventually decided to let Vihari play in the first Test match of the tour. Indian team captain Virat Kohli was criticised for Sharma’s exclusion in the game. He talked about Vihari’s remarkable performance after the match.
‘Vihari got a nod because the combination is important. He’s an effective part-time bowler and helps us when we need to catch up with the over-rate’, Kohli commented. ‘We have a group discussion and then we decide what’s best for the team. There will always be opinions about the XI, but people will know that it’s in the interest of the team’.
Vihari scored 93 in the second innings. He also helped Rahane with a century in the game. The team’s decision to include Vihari paid off in the end. The 25-year-old is one of India’s new faces. He made his Test debut in 2018 against England. The second and last Test of the tour runs from August 30 to September 4. The future match odds are for India (-625) to win against West Indies (+470).
