Lancashire CC chairman David Hodgkiss, aged 71, passed away after contracting COVID-19.
David Hodgkiss becomes the first individual involved in professional British Sport who had died of coronavirus. Hodgkiss’ death had been directly confirmed by Lancashire Cricket Club which David had served as chairman since 2017. Hodgkiss had also been on board at the Emirate Old Trafford for 22 years prior to his chairmanship at the Lancashire.
The Lancashire Cricket Club also made an announcement with regards to the situation. In a statement, they said, ‘Further to the announcement from his family, it is with great sadness that Lancashire Cricket announces the passing of its Chairman, David Hodgkiss OBE. David served the club with distinction over many years including holding the offices of treasurer, vice-chairman and latterly chairman. He was much loved by everyone at Lancashire Cricket Club and respected throughout the cricketing world. Our sincere condolences and thoughts and prayers are with his family’.
Meanwhile, ECB chairman Colin Graves also shared his deep condolences for the bereaved family by saying, ‘David was a vital part of cricket in Lancashire and was passionate about growing and developing the sport in the county. He played an integral role in the redevelopment of Emirates Old Trafford and Its status as a leading international ground is a testament to his hard work and dedication. On behalf of everyone at the England and Wales Cricket Board, our thoughts are with his family, friends and everyone at Lancashire County Cricket Club at this sad time’.
Dozens of other comforting messages were shared by those who worked closely with the late David Hodgkiss to commemorate his great life.
Hodgkiss may have lost his battle with COVID-19 but he had forever won the hearts of those who are a part of the Lancashire Cricket Club. With that, he will forever be remembered for his passion and dedication for their team which participates in the T20 Blast League.
