He was not expecting the PCB to not renew his contract as Pakistan’s head coach.
Back in May 2016, Mickey Arthur was appointed as Pakistan’s head coach for their cricket team. Under his leadership, they achieved the top rank as the best team for the T20I format. However, it was in the Test and ODI formats where the team continued to struggle.
The team had a poor performance in the 2019 World Cup, where they failed to make it into the semi-finals. Because of this, his contract as head coach was not renewed. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) had a closed meeting and said that their entire coaching staff will undergo some major changes.
“PCB will be immediately undertaking a robust recruitment process after it decided not to renew the contracts of head coach Arthur, bowling coach Azhar Mahmood, batting coach Grant Flower and trainer Grant Luden,” PCB Chief Ehsan Mani said.
Arthur wasn’t expecting this and felt angry. “I am extremely disappointed and hurt. I put in my wholehearted effort to lift Pakistan cricket,” he said.
Pakistan failed to make the semifinals of the 2019 Cricket World Cup despite tying New Zealand in points; it was their Net Run-rate that made them unable to get past the group stage. To find out more about the Cricket World Cup and other tournaments, visit Betwala’s page.
