English captain Eoin Morgan says that Alex Hales can still return to the international scene if he gains the trust of the board back.
Alex Hales lost the trust of the management after he failed his second test due to recreational drugs. Back then, now England’s limited-overs captain Eoin Morgan expressed his dismay over Hales. In fact, he described Hales’ actions showed a complete disregard to the team’s values.
To date, Morgan believes that Hales may still be able to have a comeback if he could regain the trust of the management. Similar to Morgan, others also argue that Hales had already served his punishment and that maybe he deserves another chance with England. After all, he had already missed out playing on that World Cup and he has now skipped a year of international action.
As per Morgan, ‘In terms of what that looks like, practically, it's human nature, it's about developing trust. I don't think you can put a time limit on gaining back that trust, and that's not just with me, that's with every member of the squad, the backroom staff, the selectors’.
‘What happened was actually quite considerably harmful to the environment, which obviously led to the breakdown in trust between Alex and our players, so to say, how long that will take to regain, we don't know, but certainly the door is still open for that trust to be built back up’, Morgan added.
Hales will need to do a lot of things in order to play for England once again. As he had scored well in the Big Bash leagues and on the PSL quite well, it is believed that he is targeting a return to the England squad before the T20 World Cup to be held in Australia.
However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the fate of the T20 World Cup, as well as other cricket matches, remain uncertain this year. To further understand T20s and other cricket formats, check out Betwala.
