Mumbai Indians were the first team to be knocked out of the race to the IPL 2022 playoffs. But they have found a new match winner in their team. Their 19-year-old batting all-rounder Tilak Varma has been one of the most impressive youngsters this season. He has set the record for scoring the most runs by a teenager in an IPL season. With his knock of 34*(32) against CSK, Tilak got to 368 runs in IPL 2022. Until now, the record for most runs by a teenager in a single IPL season was held by Rishabh Pant, who scored 366 runs for Delhi Capitals in IPL 2017 as a 19-year-old.
The third name in the list is Prithvi Shaw, who scored 353 runs in 16 outings in 2019 for Delhi Capitals. The fourth spot belongs to Sanju Samson, who hit 339 runs in 13 innings in 2014 for Rajasthan Royals.
Cricket pundits are already of the opinion that Tilak will be making his India debut shortly. Mumbai Indians captain Rohit Sharma had also said in a recent interaction with Star Sports that the teenager will be India’s all-format player sometime soon.
“He’s been brilliant playing for the first year. Having such a calm head is never easy and in my opinion, I feel he’s going to be an all-format player for India pretty soon. He’s got the technique, he’s got the temperament, which is the most important thing when you play at the highest level,” Rohit said.
Tilak, who represented India in the 2022 Under-19 World Cup, was picked by MI in the IPL 2022 auction for Rs 1.7 crore. As of May 14, he is the seventh-highest run-scorer in IPL 2022
