The former world's greatest spin bowler is on his way to become Pakistan's spin bowling consultant.
Mushtaq Ahmed is one of the greatest players for Pakistan cricket. He is also regarded as one of the best wrist-spinners in the world. In his entire career playing for Pakistan, he took 161 wickets in 144 games. He also played in Test matches and took 185 wickets in 52 matches including 10 five-wicket hauls.
With this, he is on track to become Pakistan’s new spin bowling consultant after the Pakistan Cricket Board issued an advertisement stating that the position was open. The post had a requirement of having a level-three coaching certificate, along with at least five years of minimum experience with elite cricketers, national or international teams. When the PCB released the ad, Mushtaq was already one of the candidates they had an eye on. The last day of application for the position is on November 19.
There are sources that have said that Mushtaq was recommended by Pakistan’s head coach-cum-chief selector Misbah-ul-Haq. He was also West Indies’ spin bowling coach during the ICC World Cup 2019. Reports say that Mushtaq had already been appointed as the spin bowling coach even before the ad was released. Saqlain Mushtaq is also believed to be in the races but Mushtaq Ahmed is the clear favourite.
Mushtaq Ahmed is currently associated with the Deccan Gladiators, a team in the T10 League. To find out more about the different cricket formats, visit Betwala's page.
