Ricky Ponting Hopes to Continue Success in IPL

He will lead the Delhi Capitals into the 2020 IPL season who hope to carry over their success from last season.

The Delhi Capitals had a great run in the IPL last season after qualifying for the play-off stage. That season was when the Delhi-based franchise was playing with a new name, new team management, and a new setup. Every fan of the team was expecting them to put on a show in every match - something that the team never failed to give to them. Despite not reaching the finals, they ended up being the most dominant team in the tournament. Ricky Ponting had recently expressed his views on the team’s success last season and wants them to continue it into this season.

Shreyas Iyer was given the responsibility of leading the Capitals in their run at the T20 league. Under his leadership, the team delivered a spectacular performance as they finished the tournament in third with 18 points. Ponting commented on last season’s success, saying that ‘the team’s atmosphere last season was great’. In keeping with the general idea of starting fresh, the entire team focused on being able to rebuild from the experiences they have collected and, in a way, implementing them into the past season.

He also said that they worked very hard which gave them great results. He added that if he did recall correctly, it was the Delhi Indians who were the best team in the tournament. As for Ponting himself, the experience was new - something that he didn’t experience with other franchises he worked for in the past. He is now looking to mirror last season’s success.

‘Oh look, I just remember how much fun the whole season was last year. We all wanted to make it feel like a fresh start for everybody. New name – Delhi Capitals. So that’s the way we went about it, you know. A totally fresh start, forgetting about the past and trying to create our own culture and our own environment where players were having fun and enjoying themselves’.

‘We trained really hard. We played some great cricket. I still sit in here 7 or 8 months later and think back that at different times it felt like we were the best team in the tournament. I just remember how much fun everybody had. It was a totally different environment than most other IPLs I’ve been a part of. That’s what we’re going to try and recreate again this year. Hopefully, we can have similar success’.

The Indian Premier League is a professional Twenty20 cricket league in India contested during March or April and May of every year by eight teams representing eight different cities in India. To find out more about the IPL, visit Betwala’s page.
