Sourav Ganguly believes Sharma opening in Tests is the best choice.
During the early years of his career, Rohit Sharma used to bat in the middle order. However, since he became an opening batsman, he started scoring boundaries, half-centuries, and centuries. He has three double centuries in ODI cricket and four centuries in T20Is. He also became the first batter to rack up five centuries in a single World Cup.
He is going to be a key member as India prepares themselves for the ICC World Test Championship. Their first match set to be played in Antigua against the West Indies. Despite this, Sourav Ganguly feels that the team management will have a difficult time choosing an opener.
‘The major decision is whether they want to play Rohit or Rahane’, he said. ‘Rohit was in excellent form in the World Cup, but in Tests in South Africa and Australia, he was “on and off”. Rahane was not his usual self in Australia’.
He also said that Sharma should open the batting because it will allow him to continue his excellent performance. ‘My suggestion would be to let Rohit carry on his good form from the World Cup and settle in the opener’s slot while Rahane continues his good work of lending stability to the middle order’.
India’s World Test Championship begins with their test match against the West Indies. Coincidentally, it is also part of their tour of the nation. The teams will be playing two Tests against one another and are set to last until September 4.
