He wanted to strengthen their bench by trying players in T20I to prepare them for ODI and Test cricket
India’s T20 captain Rohit Sharma says that the team is focused on reinforcing India’s bench. He was asked why the team is not the best in T20I cricket during a press conference. The Indian batsman replied in an honest way and said that they’re trying some youngsters for the format.
‘This is the format where we are trying a lot of players. The key players are not involved in this series so we are trying the younger players who are sitting on the fringe. That is one of the reasons because in other formats we have our entire squad playing’, Rohit said.
‘Probably that's one of the reasons, to be honest. The other formats, we have our entire squad playing the game. You get what you want from that squad. This is a format where you can try other players, and there's no harm in that’, he added.
Rohit explained that they try players to make them ready for ODIs and Tests. This gives them the chance to play in their own way. He also said that he had seen a lot of players who started in T20I and succeeded to play for ODI and Test cricket. The purpose of it is not just to win the matches but also to strengthen the team.
