Tendulkar wants Ganguly to reconstruct the domestic cricket structure in India and will be discussed soon.
Last October, Sourav Ganguly was named in charge of the BCCI. Around the same time, he shared his views on improving India’s domestic cricket structure. Ahead of the Annual General Meeting on December 1, Sachin Tendulkar has given some suggestions and recommendations on what to change and how to improve some things. He also asked his former teammates for more suggestions that would help improve cricket in India.
In his first month in charge, Ganguly was able to successfully organize the first-ever Day-Night Test at the Eden Gardens. Together with the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB), they were able to organize a proper match on such short notice. Ganguly made sure that all the kinks would be ironed out and that it would be a historic game.
Among the suggestions that Tendulkar gave, he believes that Ganguly should look into the current condition of domestic tournaments. According to him, players are more focused on their individual performance and are playing depending on the needs of the game. If there is any major tournament upcoming or an auction, they will give their 110% best. If there isn’t, chances are they won’t even exert any effort.
‘I want him (Ganguly) to consider looking at the Duleep Trophy…I feel Duleep Trophy is one tournament where one is getting to hear that players are possibly more focused on their own performances and what the next tournament is and they play accordingly. For instance, if there’s an IPL auction, or an upcoming T20 tournament or one-day, players end up playing in that mode and not for their team or looking at the need of the hour’, said Tendulkar in an interview.
He also added that ‘...cricket is a team sport and players just can’t play focussing on their individual performance. It is all about team spirit and effort where nobody as an individual can prosper’.
‘This is one change I would like to see because cricket has always been a team sport. It is all about team spirit bonding and playing together as a team. Not as individuals. Top four Ranji teams and there should be two more teams because there would be a number of teams with talented individuals but which did not qualify. You pick these players from various teams, also promote talented age-group players from Under-19 and Under-23’.
One of the domestic tournaments that the BCCI could improve upon is the Indian Premier League or IPL. To find out more about this and other leagues, visit Betwala’s page.
