MCC president Kumar Sangakkara has been offered an extension of his term which was supposed to end on September 2020.
Kumar Sangakkara is the first-ever non-British President of the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC). Seven months after he created history in the club, the committee of the MCC has decided to offer the Sri Lankan president an extension of his term.
This agenda of the MCC will still need to be approved at the annual general meeting of the club which is scheduled on June 24. Traditionally, the president of the club is named after the gathering. In this case, the nomination concerning Sangakkara’s term extension until 2021 will also be decided on the course of the meeting.
Should it not be approved by the members, then Sangakkara’s term will end on September 30, 2020. Meanwhile, if the members deem it best for him to extend his term, then he will remain as the president up until 2021. Aside from that, he will also enter an elite list of people who have served the club on multiple terms.
Sangakkara has worked well with MCC for several years after he had been honoured with a lifetime membership in 2012. That same year, he joined the club’s world cricket committee. Last February 2020, he captained the club on its historic tour of Pakistan which had served to be their first tour in 47 years.
MCC is based at the Lord’s Cricket Ground. This is also the same home ground of the Middlesex County Cricket Club which actively plays for the T20 Blast League. To know more about the T20 Blast League, visit Betwala.
