Rohit Sharma and Mohammed Shami will return to the India T20I squad for their tour of New Zealand on January 24.
Sharma and Shami were rested for the home series against Sri Lanka. The return of their teammate, Hardik Pandya is still pending due to his ‘rehabilitation process is taking longer than expected’, according to the BCCI last Sunday, January 12.
The last game played by Pandya was the home T20Is against South Africa in September 2019. Afterwards, he underwent surgery for his problematic back. Initially, he was part of the India A limited-overs tour of New Zealand, but was pulled out and replaced by Vijay Shankar.
On the other hand, Rohit Sharma was included at the expense of Sanju Samson. He played T20I wherein he was in and out of the squad. KL Rahul and Shikhar Dhawan are also included in the squad and showing good performances. The duo poses a threat for India’s upcoming opponents.
There are not many injuries in seam-bowling players. India has a 16-man squad, captained by Virat Kohli which made it a possibility to include Shami. Navdeep Saini and Shardul Thakur keep their positions along with Jasprit Bumrah.
India also managed to keep all four spinners, namely Kuldeep Yadav, Yuzvendra Chahal, Washington Sudnar and Ravindra Jadeja.
India is set for three ODIs against Australia, then a complete tour of New Zealand on January 24.
