Tamim Iqbal takes over on ODI captaincy for the Bangladesh team after Mashrafe Mortaza steps down.
Tamim Iqbal was announced to be Bangladesh’s new ODI captain after the BCB held a meeting last Sunday. He replaced former captain Mashrafe Mortaza who recently stepped down from the captaincy after the ODI series against Zimbabwe.
Iqbal had already led the team before when he stood as a replacement for Mortaza’s absence. In fact, he was the one who led the team into the ODI series against Sri Lanka last July. Aside from that, he had also captained the team against New Zealand way back January 2017.
According to the BCB, they had selected Tamim as they expect him to lead the team for a long time. The BCB also stated how they hope not to name another captain next year because they see Tamim as a long-term captain.
The new captain showed his gratitude when he stated that the captaincy is a huge honour for him. He also believes that he has huge shoes to fill as Mashrafe Bin Mortaza had indeed served as a great model of inspiration as a captain for him as well as for the whole team.
Iqbal will start to captain the team on the one-off ODI against Pakistan on April 1. To further understand ODIs and the other cricket formats, check out Betwala.
