Black Caps captain is regarded as greatest ODI player in team
Former New Zealand captain Daniel Vettori said that right-handed batsman and current team captain Kane Williamson is the greatest ODI player that the team has ever had. This comes after Williamson scored 106 in their recent match against South Africa where they won by four wickets.
“Kane Williamson has to be New Zealand’s greatest ODI player of all time—and innings like that against South Africa tell you exactly why,” said Vettori in a column he wrote for the International Cricket Council website.
“He’s already there now and by the end of his career, his record will far exceed anything we’ve had in the past or present, he really is that good.”
In their match against the Proteas, the Black Caps were in trouble with their 137 score for five in the 33rd over. However, all-rounder Colin de Grandhomme helped Williamson carry the score to win the match. The duo got 91 runs for the six wickets while Williamson continued his pace and got nine fours and a six in his 138-ball knock.
Vettori continued that Williamson has done a lot for the team in a short period of time which was a joy to watch.
“Kane has done so much in a short period, whether a captain or not, he’s been exceptional and he’s an absolute joy to watch,” stated Vettori. “What differentiates him from a lot of batsmen in this day and age is his sole focus is winning the game and he tailors his batting towards that.”
New Zealand will play their next match against West Indies on Saturday at Old Trafford Cricket Ground. The Black Caps currently have -250 odds to reach the final of the 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup.
