The 2019-2020 domestic season of Zimbabwe has been voided and no winner has been declared.
All cricket events in Zimbabwe had been suspended since March 18. As the country’s lockdown got extended, Zimbabwe Cricket decided that it was best to declare the domestic season void.
No winner had been declared even if the Eagles had been on top of the first-class points table and the Mountaineers fell next to them. With regards to the 50-overs tournament, the Tuskers came in at the top spot while the Mountaineers still stood second.
With regards to the first-class competition, some teams had already played six matches while the others had just played five. In the List A tournament, the Rhinos had just played four while the rest of the teams had played five. Having an unequal number of games played, Zimbabwe Cricket considered it unfair to declare a winner.
Zimbabwe Cricket director Hamilton Masakadza said, ‘We were looking forward to the conclusion of our season, but seeing what is happening in our country and elsewhere across the world, we realised it was not realistic for us to expect our competitions to resume anytime soon. ZC therefore decided to void the 2019/20 season with immediate effect and we will not declare a winner or award any of the trophies as teams had not played an equal number of games when the season was curtailed’.
Zimbabwe’s first-class domestic cricket and List A tournament follows a more unique style compared to the other forms of cricket. To be familiarized with the common formats of cricket, head over to Betwala.
