The Perth Scorchers have signed up Sophie Devine to be their new captain in the upcoming season of the WBBL.
New Zealand captain and former Adelaide Strikers player Sophie Devine has now signed a contract with the Perth Scorchers where she will be the team captain. Last season, it can be remembered that Devine has been hailed as the player of the tournament after she scored a total of 769 runs and took a total of 19 wickets.
As per Devine, ‘It's a huge honour to be joining the Scorchers and leading the side this season, it's an exciting new challenge for me and the team as we build towards the WBBL finals. When the opportunity to play for Perth came up it was a pretty hard one to turn down, the Scorchers have a great history in the WBBL and BBL and I'm really looking forward to joining such a successful club’.
‘I have spent some quality time in the WA set-up, which has really helped me further my game and I am looking forward to playing under (coach) Shelley (Nitschke), we have a great relationship and I have played a lot of cricket with her too over my years with the Strikers’, she added.
In response, Perth Scorchers coach Nitschke said, ‘Sophie has proven herself as one of the best T20 players in the world, we are privileged to have her join the Perth Scorchers. A match-winner with both the bat and the ball, Sophie will be a great influence on the group as both a leader and role model’.
Devine will join Australian batter Beth Mooney in the Scorchers as they aim to raise the team’s honour after Meg Lanning moved back to the Melbourne Stars. To learn more about the Women’s Big Bash League, you may refer to Betwala’s page about the men’s BBL.
